Insurance And Reimbursement
Counseling is not covered by Alberta Health Care but most extended health care plans (Blue Cross, for example) provide a certain amount of coverage for the services of a registered psychologist (also referred to as a “chartered” or “licensed” psychologist). Your plan might also list this as coverage for “counseling”, “psychology”, or “psychotherapy”.
We welcome you to take a look at our psychological evaluation page, many times these evaluations make highly valuable contributions to evaluating psychological conditions.
Check the terms of your plan to find out the amount of reimbursement you are entitled to. These plans sometimes require you to fill out provided documents, so be sure to check with your provider about the terms of your coverage before sending in your receipts for reimbursement.
The fees you pay for psychological counseling are considered a tax-deductible medical expense. This means you can claim them at the end of the fiscal year, in the same way you claim other medical and dental expenses.
It is also important to keep in mind that registered psychologists are exempt from charging GST for their professional services.
